Marco Zarbin
After a first degree in biochemistry, Marco Attilio Eugenio Zarbin, MD, PhD, graduated in Medicine and Pharmacology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. At the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute of the same university, he completed an ophthalmology residency and fellowships in vitreoretinal surgery and in medical retinal disease as a Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellow.
Dr. Zarbin was an Assistant Chief of Service at Wilmer in 1989. From 1990-1993, served as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco and as Chief of the Division of Ophthalmology at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, San Francisco.
Since 1994, he is Chair of the Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) and Chief of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. He is a Professor of Ophthalmology and Neuroscience at NJMS and holds the Alfonse A. Cinotti, MD/Lions Eye Research Chair. He is also co-Director of the Ocular Cell Transplantation Laboratory and Center for Macular Degeneration Research at NJMS.
Dr. Zarbin has co-authored 184 peer-reviewed scientific publications, 120 book chapters, 18 reviews and editorials, and 37 reports. He has co-edited one book on age-related macular degeneration, two books on cell-based therapy for retinal degenerative disease, and two books on the management of diabetic retinopathy. He is the recipient of more than twenty awards, active member of numerous international societies, editorial board member of the most prestigious peer-reviewed journals and Vice Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Foundation Fighting Blindness.
