Ingrid Kreissig

Ingrid Kreissig is a world-renowned retina specialist, currently Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Mannheim-Heidelberg, Germany, Adjunct Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the Weill Cornell Medical College of New York, USA, and Professor honoris causa at the Ufa Eye Research Institute, Russia.
She previously held the position as Head of the Department of Posterior Segment of the Eye at the University of Bonn, Germany, and Chairperson of the Department of Ophthalmology III (Retina and Vitreous Surgery) at the Eberhard Karls University of Tuebingen, Germany. She was the first woman in Germany to chair an academic department for surgery in Ophthalmology.
She trained more than 300 ophthalmologists from Eastern European countries, Russia, China, Japan, India, North and South America, Turkey, Kuwait, Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Iran, Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Nigeria, Italy, Austria, France, Spain, Belgium, UK, Ireland, Sweden. Many of them have achieved leadership position at universities or eye hospitals in the respective countries. She subsequently organized together with them her yearly worldwide Teaching Courses on: Retinal detachment surgery, the diabetic eye, AMD (age-related macular degeneration), and intraocular tumors.
Prof. Kreissig’s interests are: retinal detachment surgery including the balloon operation, medical retina with particular engagement in diagnostics and treatment options for: diabetic retinopathy, AMD, retinal/macular diseases and in research: cryosurgery, the perfluorocarbon gases and the quantity and quality of postoperative visual function after repair of a retinal detachment during long-term follow-up.
Prof. Kreissig authors/co-authors 423 publications, including 15 books on retinal detachment surgery in 6 languages and 33 chapters in textbooks. She supports the Kreissig Travel Grant at the annual ARVO meeting. The Kreissig Award provided at the yearly EURETINA Congress, established in 2003 by former coworkers, is supported by the Kreissig Foundation at the University of Tuebingen.
